First things first, I’m not suggesting for a single second we start competing with one another to be the best-dressed anything – I’ve never been the Best Dressed Guest in my life. This blog is essentially about being the best dressed you – and being the best dressed you, as we know, can take bloody AGES. What a minefield it is trying to figure out what to wear to a wedding, big family hoo-ha, ex-boyfriend’s birthday party, nerve-racking job interview. New jobs, religious holidays, country weekends, city breaks; life is full of events and happenings – big, small or otherwise!
Age old question: how to find a special-occasion outfit without having to trawl through endless websites? As for trudging through the actual shops… Oof. Fine, if you have five hours to spare. But, even then, I’m not sure I’ve ever found the exact thing I set out to find. That’s why I set up this blog – to help take the frantic out of getting ready for a special occasion, however big or small.
Back in 2013, after my second child, Martha, was born, I left my full-time job at ELLE magazine, where I’d been for over a decade, and embraced a new life as a freelance fashion editor, albeit one with a new baby and a toddler. (How relaxing.) Five years on, I run a fashion-consultancy business and I’m back writing for ELLE, filing a beauty column each month. I write regularly for The Pool and various newspapers, and life is pretty busy, so having had the idea for this blog over two years ago, it’s no surprise Best Dressed Guest was put to one side, waiting for a day when I’d have the time and energy to do to it properly. With both kids now at school, and in a year of two royal weddings, plus my own (jeez, finally), what better time to launch an occasion-focused fashion website? Bring on the wedding frenzy!
When it comes to feeling confident and putting on a good show, fashion has always been my armour, and clothes, without wishing to sound too dramatic, have saved my ass more times than I can remember (anyone else dread walking into a room of well-dressed strangers?). We may not be able to control how we feel on the inside, but as far as outfit nerves are concerned, we can try our damndest to look our best. Look shit-hot and ready for anything? LET’S DO THIS,
PS Looking for an outfit for a particular occasion, but can’t find it on my site? Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll do my best to help.
PPS This is an airbrushing free zone. Hence my gnarly feet.
