Show up in Style

Wedding prep, plus a lovely frock

What should a bride do 18 days before her wedding? Pull up a chair.

Last week, during half-term, I drank several bottles of rosé and ate chips morning, noon and night. Well, I was up north with two kids – would be illegal not to. Back home, in an attempt to compensate for last week’s carb and booze overdose, this weekend I hit two spin classes HARD, ate dust and drank wine. As for clothes feeling a tad tight, I think the wine could be the issue. BUT IT WAS HALF-TERM! That’s all I’m saying. I needed the wine. I’m now off the wine for two weeks. I’m sure everything is going to be JUST fine in time for June 22nd.

Take the bloody spa trip – forget about the fact you agreed to upload a semi-naked shot of yourself to Instagram, with the hashtag #Iloveskimpybikinis

I never go for facials, which, given one of my regular gigs is writing a beauty column for ELLE magazine, may suggest someone needs to have a word with me. Would they say, ‘Take the bloody spa trip – forget about the fact you agreed to upload a semi-naked shot of yourself to Instagram, with the hashtag #Iloveskimpybikinis’? There’s no such thing as a free lunch, and any press trip or treatment I have has to ‘go live’ somewhere, so I decided to do an at-home spa and pick my face, causing all kinds of redness mayhem instead. Then, as if things couldn’t get much worse, I applied a ‘light gradual tan’ and awoke looking like an Oompa-Loompa. My soon-to-be husband, who is ONE week away from finishing his doctoral thesis, hasn’t smiled for five weeks, so it was lovely to see him laugh. Shame it was at his bride-to-be and her bright orange face…

Wearing a label I’ve never heard of, the mid-length Olivia Rubin dress she wore to her sister’s wedding was just lovely

Same dress, quite a bit shorter

I’ve even gone off shopping. I kid you not. Well, until I spotted Vogue’s Jessica Diner looking resplendent on Instagram this morning. Wearing a label I’ve never heard of, the mid-length Olivia Rubin dress she wore to her sister’s wedding at the weekend was just lovely.  I assumed it would be extremely expensive, but love the fact it was £450 as opposed to £4,500. Wedding-wise, I think I’m back on track. No more chips and wine, no more attacking my own face with sharp nails and definitely no more fake tan. As for Jessica Diner’s best-dressed wedding-guest dress? Why can’t everything be that effortless…

A lovely frock
